GU14 WC Velocity - 3rd Place in Pleasanton Soccer City Warm Up

VelocityThe Walnut Creek Velocity took the field Saturday morning against the host Pleasanton Rage Orange and immediately went on the attack.  They were rewarded when a smartly played through ball from Cristina Lopez found Paige Farber who placed a beautiful shot beyond the reach the keeper for a 1-0 Velocity lead.  The 2nd turned the Rage's way and they equalized for a 1-1 final score but not before many outstanding saves from keeper Katie Garaventa.  Velocity went on to lose to finalists Eureka Placer Flames, an Association Cup quarterfinalist last season, 2-0 in the 2nd game.  Sunday morning needing a win to advance, Velocity went down 1-0 within 5 minutes.  The girls were determined not to allow that setback to derail their goal of advancing.  The midfield took over and dominated play, and created many scoring opportunites, and just before the half Farber netted a goal on a volley from a cross from Lopez.  In the dying minutes, left winger Katie Kaprive sent over a beautifully lofted left foot cross that Zoe Westwater drove into the net for the winning goal and a 2-1 victory.  Facing San Ramon Azuri in the consolation game, Velocity played an outstanding game and finished up 2-0 winners with goals from Allie Macaulay and a header from Kaprive on a beautifully placed corner kick from Macaulay.  The weekend was successful because the girls worked hard when things looked bleak and it was outstanding effort and team play that they were finally rewarded for.  Velocity is a new U14 girls team with WCSC and looks forward to improving their play and having a successful season in Al Caffodio league.
