SCA (Speed, Coordination, and Agility) Program

Background information
The program is based upon scientific research and applied appropriately to the development stages of the human body. The program has specific areas of focus for each age group. Sessions will be performed both with and without the ball. Research has shown that pure speed (running) and speed with the ball (dribbling), can be improved by a training program that incorporates coordination and agility along with speed. This is more effective than simply spring training without a ball.
Soccer and its athletes are continually evolving as the game has created a demand for faster, stronger, more coordinated and healthier athletes. Today’s youth are different than previous generations. Many of our youth spend more time in indoors and less time outside playing and learning coordination and agility than previous generations who learned these skills through outside play. The SCA program's goal is to teach these skills and increase speed, coordination and agility based upon principles of exercise physiology

Walnut Creek Soccer Club's SCA Program 2011
The Walnut Creek Soccer Club’s SCA (Speed, Coordination and Agility) program has a goal of developing our soccer player’s abilities through a scientifically based program. Recent research has shown that the current youth soccer player might miss some developmental milestones. This is largely due to a decline in children’s free play as compared to previous generations. The ages between 11 and 14 are especially important as sudden growth occurs in most children which impairs their coordination ability. This program will look to train the young player at these specific windows of development. Following this Long-term Athlete Development philosophy, the players will be more coordinated during and after this phase of growth through their participation in the SCA Program. If these development milestones of training are missed it is very difficult to teach at an older age. The SCA Program will focus specifically on the U11-U14 age groups to ensure that our athletes learn to control their bodies to improve their motor abilities (coordination, proprioception, mobility, conditioning, agility). Speed of thought, speed of execution, anticipatory speed and pure speed will also be developed as these are very important components of developing soccer players. An additional benefit to participation is that this program can serve as injury prevention.
SCA Program Directors are Damian Scott and Ivan Kepcija both of whom have experience in implementing these methods on the field in our club and as NorCal PDP (Player Development Program) coaches. Additionally, they have graduate level educations in Kinesiology. The details of the program are outlined below.
