2024 Walnut Creek Soccer Club Team Formation Policy U5-U19 Age Groups

The intent of the WCSC Recreation Program is to develop fundamental soccer skills while creating a fun atmosphere that encourages sportsmanship, teamwork and competition. We achieve this when teams are balanced with all levels of skill and experience.

Team Roster Formation:

The club forms teams internally based on age group, gender and geographic location (school child attends).  Team formation is sorted automatically by our club’s online system and said criteria.  Adjustment of rosters may be made at the discretion of club administration only.  There is no perfect system of team formation, but we are forecasting close to 2000 players and roster formation accuracy, timeliness and objectivity is critical to our program.

Geographic Area:  We will form teams as much as possible according to the school of attendance and/or neighborhood. When there is an imbalance of player enrollment or lack of coaches in a particular area, it is often necessary to mix players with a variety of schools.  When this happens, players may be able to play with other schoolmates or neighbors, but may not necessarily play on an entirely "neighborhood" or school team. Often, teams will contain players from adjacent schools or neighborhoods (i.e. Murwood and Walnut Heights). The club generally will not, unless absolutely necessary, form teams that contain players from east and west Walnut Creek.

Please note that there is no guarantee that your child’s practice will be held at their own home school. We do not accept requests for practice location, day or times. Coaches are solely responsible for determining practice location, day and time. This is determined after teams have already been formed.

U5 Age Group rosters are formed by team formation policy.

U6 to U12 Age Group rosters are formed by team formation policy that includes provision for players born in July, August and September to choose age groups  based on their 2024 grade.

U14 to U19 Age Group rosters are formed by team formation policy(ex. attending school) AND by the guidelines of US Soccer/NorCal Premier birth year.  These age groups are also blended (ex U13 & U14 together).

*Final rosters are not negotiable, nor does the club form teams around coach requests, buddy requests or play up request
*Rosters are scheduled to be released around mid July.
*Registration will ask if your child would like to stay with last season’s team.  This information will allow the club to assign rosters but does not guarantee placement to last season's team or coach.
*Buddy requests and play up requests are not permitted.  See team formation policy.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q - Do you accept “buddy” requests?

A - No, the club removed this consideration of mutual friend requests in 2021.

Q - Do you allow “play up” or “play down” requests?

A - No, starting with the 2023 season, play up and play down requests are not a consideration in our team formation process

Q - Can I request my coach from last season?

A - YES, you will need to answer the registration question regarding last season’s coach and if you prefer to continue on the same team.  There is no guarantee the head coach will volunteer this season, so we will evaluate last year’s team roster and make the best decision available.

Q - I live outside of Walnut Creek, how will my child be placed on a team?

A - Your child will be placed on a team closest to your zip code and applicable school within Walnut Creek.

Q - What if I don’t want my same coach as last season?

A - During the registration process, click on the appropriate response.  Team formation will consider this when assigning your child to a team.  No guarantee of course.

Q - Can I get a refund for my registration if I choose not to have my child play on the team?

A - No. We do not issue refunds because families are unhappy with the team their child was placed on.  Refer to our refund policy.
